Qwant is a French search engine built around not profiling users, but its original promise of complete independence from Big Tech infrastructure has shifted: it’s now controlled by OVHcloud founder Octave Klaba following a 2023 restructuring, and it shares its search index with Ecosia through a joint venture rather than running fully standalone infrastructure. Ownership … Read more
Ecosia is a Bing-powered search engine that puts 100% of its advertising profits toward climate action, primarily tree planting, and states it does not build personal profiles or sell user data. Its biggest limitation is that its search results mirror Bing’s index rather than an independent one. How Ecosia Actually Works Ecosia doesn’t run its … Read more
Traditional search engines return a ranked list of links for you to click through; AI search tools generate a single synthesized answer built from multiple sources, often with no click required at all. That difference changes everything from how you should phrase a query to how much you should double-check what you’re told. How Traditional … Read more
The right first private search engine depends less on which one is “most private” in the abstract and more on what you actually search for: general browsing, EU-based independence, kid-safe results, or a fully self-hosted setup all point to different answers. Search engines mainly make money three ways: advertising (the dominant model), paid subscriptions with no ads, and newer token-based reward systems tied to search activity. Here’s exactly where to look and what language should make you pause. Section 1: What Data Is Collected Look … Read more

A search engine is genuinely private if it doesn’t log your IP address long-term, doesn’t build a profile from your search history, doesn’t personalize results based on past behavior, and is transparent and specific about all three in its actual privacy policy — not just its homepage. “Privacy-focused” on its own is a marketing phrase. … Read more
Every search engine review on this site is built around five checks: what the engine’s privacy policy actually says, how it handles logging and personalization, whether it runs its own index or depends on another engine, how usable the results are day-to-day, and how transparent the company is about its business model. Here’s how each … Read more
